Week 2

For the first lecture, we all have learn about introduction to building services. So as we know, a building is not only gives shelter to human but also have a multifunction services depending on the facilities that we had at the building. But the most important things is the comfort of the people in the building.

In the building services, there are some aspect that we have to consider in choosing the standard comfort of building, include the environmental aspects and function of building, and human comfort.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS AND FUNCTION OF BUILDING

The environmental aspects is actually relating to the surrounding area of a living place. There are some factors including temperature, humidity, safety, clean and many more. We should provide an environment where people or human can feel comfortable to work and live in a building.

Function of a building is to provide shelter from weather, disaster or even wild animals. In addition, a building don't just provide shelter but they also provide comfortable for the people to live in it. This is include the system for heat, light, electrical power, communication and etc.

Thermal Factor

Human beings operate and feel better when they are at average temperatures which is 19-21 degrees and outside is -1 degrees. However, physical factor is the one that affect the temperature of the room and human comfort such as air temperature, mean radiation temperature, relative humidity and air velocity. The air temperature inside of a building will change depending on the temperature outside the building and the materials used to build the walls. Besides, the air temperature is also affected by the people inside the building and what the activity they are doing.

The mean radiant temperature is the radiation that is coming into the building from windows and walls that balanced against the radiation given off by the human body while relative humidity is the percentage of water vapour saturation in the air also affects the human comfort.

The final physical factor that affects human comfort is the air velocity. This can be affected by the convection in the room, the warm air enters a room and rises to the ceiling, pushing the cold air downwards makes the temperature of the room colder that the room temperature.

Sound Factor

The sound can decide in two type which are impact sound and air-bone sound. There are two difference sound because the source of the sound comes from difference way.

Air-bone sound is sound which travels through the air before reaching a partition, meaning that the vibrations must have travel through the air before they reach the partition. For example, the main sources of air-borne noise are voices, radios and musical instruments.

For the impact sound, the sound is vibrations that are generated on the partition and a continuous vibration can be classed as a series of impact noises in succession. Impact noise does not travel through air. The main sources of impact noise are footsteps, slamming door and vibrating machinery.

Both types of sound have different ways of preventing, so different installations must be put in to insulate from the type of sound. Air-born sound can be prevented by mass of partitions. For example, thick walls as lightweight particles give very little resistance unless the are in layers. However, for the impact sounds are prevented is by using vibration pads and soft covering on floors and walls.

We also have prepared relevant materials that explain the current standard of comfort in a building.

1) Window

Human comfort in building is strongly influenced by window. This is because windows can absorb and transmit a significant amount of solar radiation. Besides that, windows can exchange from long-wave radiation between building occupants and their surroundings. Windows also can induce air motion (convective drafts) caused by a difference between the glass surface temperature and the adjacent air temperature that make the room in a comfortable temperature.

2) Air Ventilation Fan

The concepts of air ventilation is ventilation moves outdoor air into a building or a room and distributes it within the building or room. According to this article, it is important to have well-ventilated buildings because it can reduce temperatures. When there are lots of people in a building space, the environment can become hot and not comfortable. A ventilated building will makes someone comfort and making it more productive workplace.
Besides, when indoor air pollution combined with bad ventilation room, it can lead to a number of health problems including headache and sinusitis. All of this problems can be avoided by install a good ventilation system in a building.
3) Water Tank

Water is the most important part in our lives and it is something that cannot do without. So, almost every building has water tank. A water tank is a container for storing water. Water tanks are used to provide storage of water for use in many applications such as drinking water, irrigation agriculture, fire suppression, agricultural farming and more. Water tanks are an efficient way to help developing countries to store clean water.

Air Conditioner

Air conditioning is a very important material in a multi-storey building such as office, hospital or large home. This is because the air conditioner will provide a stable air temperature and an area environment. In addition, it aims to create a conducive atmosphere as well as the convenience of consumers.

The definition for air conditioning is the process of escorting and maintenance of all air contents for space or enclosed space for comfort. For example, in the air conditioning office is very important as it provides comfort to humans in order to produce good quality and increase productivity. In addition, the air conditioner also controls temperature and humidity in the medicinal process room and stores or stores its food and storage.

There are several key factors that need to be taken into account, namely the optimum temperature for satisfaction for human comfort as far as possible to achieve the required level. The appropriate temperature is 22 to 27 degrees Celsius. Air movement within a certain space must not exceed 12 meters / minute. Additionally, the supply of clean air must be enough to prevent the smell of the human body from being very significant and also ensuring cleanliness. (Article)
