Week 4

Domestic Water Supply & Plumbing Installation in High Rise Building

In week 3, we have learnt about water supply & plumbing installation in low rise building. For this week, we learnt for high rise building. There are 2 type for operational system in high rise building:
  1. Boosted system 1
  2. Boosted system 2
Pressure booster system is used in high rise building. There are consist of pump, control panel and a series of pipe.

There are 5 system configurations for pressure booster system:
  1. Single booster system
  2. Zone-divided system
  3. Roof tanks/overhead tanks with terrace booster system
  4. Series-connected systems with intermediate break tanks
  5. Series-connected systems without intermediate break tanks
These are the advantages & disadvantages for the system configurations:

VALVES AND FITTING

VALVES
A valve is a mechanism that opens and closes to control the flow of fluids. In a scientific context, fluids include both liquids and gases – any substance that can flow freely – and valves may use either. Valves control fluid flow in motors, plumbing, irrigation, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Sometimes the venerable pre-transistor vacuum tube is referred to as a valve as well.

There are many types of valve :

1.
Stop Valve
To control the flow of water at high pressure

2.
Gate Valve
To control the flow water on low pressure installations

3.
Scour Valve
To emptied the cisterns for maintenance and cleaning

4.
Float Valve
Automatic flow control devices fitted to cisterns to maintain an appropriate volume of water

FITTING
Pipe fittings are parts that connect pipe sections together or to other components in in-line, offset, multi-port, or mounting configurations.

Installed between two length of pipes to allow a change of direction

2.
Coupling
Connects two pipes

3.
Reducer
Allows for a change in pipe size to meet hydraulic flow requirements of the system

4.
Tee
Can connect pipes of different diameters or change the direction of pipe run

5.
Pillar Tap
Used to supply water to basins, bath, bidets and sinks

6.
Bib Tap
Used for wall fixing, normally about 150mm above a sanitary appliance
