Week 3

What is Water Supply?
Water supply from where the service pipe enters the building through one of the following system depending on the pressure of the water and timings of the supply which include fittings and appliances connected thereafter.

Source of Water
1.  Surface Water

2. Undergrond Water

3.Frozen water

Water Treatment Process

Water Intake
Community water system users always received their water from a surface water source. Surface water is water that collects on the ground or in lakes, streams, river, reservoir or ocean. Surface water is constantly lost through evaporation, replenished through precipitation and seepage into ground water supplies. Ground water which is obtained from shallow wells and deep wells also one of the sources to supply community water system and drinking water.

Mixing Chamber
The raw water then enters an aerator which the pH is adjusted and water is rapidly mixed with liquid aluminium sulphate at ambient temperature. Pre-lime and a primary coagulant, poly aluminium chloride are added to help the impurities stick together to form particles called floc.

Flocculation
During this stage, the water flows into flocculation basins where the flow of water is slowed, so the floc has time to form a larger and heavier particle which are easier to remove by settling or filtration.

Filtration
Water flows through large filters made of sand, gravel and anthracite. The filtration process removes any remaining microscopic particles and microorganisms. The filters are routinely cleaned by backwashing.

Disinfection
The water is disinfected to protect it against bacteria before the water progress to the distribution system. Chlorine is used since it is very effective disinfectant. Besides, fluoride is also added to support good dental health.

Distribution
The clean water is the pumped into pipes that deliver it to housing area and industrial.
System of supply

Water supply is the provision of water by public utilities commercial organisations, community or by individuals usually via a system of pumps and pipes. Water supply have two type which is direct supply system and indirect supply system.

1. Direct Supply System
The direct supply system means send the main pressured drinking standard water to every cold tap in house including the bath, bathroom basin and kitchen sink.
2. Indirect Supply System
The indirect supply system means the water will going to overhead tank and then redistributed to fixtures by gravity.

Our Case Building

The building that we choose is Dewan Sultan Iskandar. The hall is one of the examples of building with indirect water supply system. The connection with the street main is carried directly to a tank is to handle low-flow wells or a limited water-supply.
